Balancing between Seeking Knowledge and Softening the Heart— Ibn al-Jawzi


Imam abu’l-Faraj ibn a-Jawzi, in his book Sayd al-Khaatir, wrote the following on the importance of softening the heart in the midst of talab al-’ilm (seeking knowledge):

رأيت الاشتغال بالفقه وسماع الحديث لا يكاد يكفي في صلاح القلب إلا أن يمزج بالرقائق والنظر في سير السلف الصالحين‏.‏ لأنهم تناولوا مقصود النقل وخرجوا عن صور الأفعال المأمور بها إلى ذوق معانيها والمراد بها‏.

I feel that occupying oneself with fiqh and acquiring narrations is hardly enough to rectify the heart, unless one mixes with that the study of al-raqaa’iq (heart-softening narrations) and examining the biographies of the salaf al-saaliheen, because they [i.e. the Salaf] realized the intended purpose of those narrations and extracted the commanded actions from them, perceiving their intended meanings and desired understandings thereby.

 

 

‏ وما أخبرتك بهذا إلا بعد معالجة وذوق لأني وجدت جمهور المحدثين وطلاب الحديث همة أحدهم في الحديث العالي وتكثير الأجزاء‏.‏ وجمهور الفقهاء في علوم الجدل وما يغالب به الخصم‏.‏ وكيف يرق القلب مع هذه الأشياء‏.‏

And I do not inform you of this except after personal trials and error, because I have found that the majority of the muhadditheen and students of hadeeth are primarily concerned with the shortest chain of narration and increasing the number of narrations. And that the majority of the fuqahaa’(jurists) are primarily concerned with knowledge of debate, argumentation and how to win an a dispute. And how can hearts by softened with these things?

 

 

وقد كان جماعة من السلف يقصدون البعد الصالح للنظر إلى سمته وهديه‏.‏ لا لاقتباس وذلك أن ثمرة علمه هديه وسمته فافهم هذا وامزج طلب الفقه والحديث بمطالعة سير السلف والزهاد في الدنيا ليكون سبباً لرقة قلبك‏.‏

And there used to be a group of the salaf who would visit a righteous servant in order to observe his characteristics and manners, and not to take knowledge from him. And that is because the fruits of his knowledge were his manners and conduct, so understand this! So combine the study of fiqh and hadeeth with studying the lives of the salaf and those who exercises zuhd in this dunya in order that this might be a cause of softening for your heart.

 

 

وقد جمعت لكل واحد من مشاهير الأخيار كتاباً فيه أخباره وآدابه‏.‏ فجمعت كتاباً في أخبار الحسن وكتاباً في أخبار سفيان الثوري وإبراهيم بن أدهم وبشر الحافي وأحمد بن حنبل ومعروف وغيرهم من العلماء والزهاد والله الموفق للمقصود‏.‏ ولا يصلح العمل مع قلة العلم‏.‏ فهما في ضرب المثل كسائق وقائد والنفس بينهما حرون ومع جد السائق والقائد ينقطع المنزل ونعوذ بالله من الفتور‏.‏

And I have compiled a book for each and every one of the well-known and excellent people, containing their tales and their manners. I have compiled a book about the exploits of al-Hasan (al-Basri), and a book about the exploits of Sufyan al-Thawri, Ibrahim ibn Adhham, Bishr al-Haafi, Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Ma’roof, and others from the ‘ulamaa’and those who were known for their zuhd, and Allah is the giver of success. And deeds are not performed correctly with (only) a little knowledge. And what should be understood (from all this speech) is in the parable of a stick and a carrot [i.e. a push-factor and a pull-factor, one thing which is motivating you by fear and another which is motivating you with a reward], and a person’s soul is stubbornly in between the two. But with a persistent stick and carrot, one can keep moving, and we seek refuge with Allah from apathy.

The rich who are living in the lap of luxury on the Day of Resurrection

Those who are content with the life of this world, and who enjoy a great deal of luxury, will have a hard time on the Day of Resurrection. The Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) has told us that the one who frequently has a full stomach in this world will feel hungry for a long time on the Day of Resurrection.

 

In Sunan at-Tirmidhi, Sunan ibn Maajah and Mustadrak al-Haakim it is narrated that the Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said to one of his Companions:

“Withhold your burps from us, for those who are most satisfied in this world will be hungry for the longest time on the Day of Resurrection. “

[The isnaad of this hadith is quoted by Shaykh Naasiruddeen al-Albaani in Silsilat al-Ahaadeeth as-Saheehah, hadith no. 343.]

 

 

And he told us that those who own a lot of wealth and worldly luxuries will have the least reward on the Day of Resurrection, unless they spent their wealth in good ways. Both Bukhari and Muslim narrated that Abu Dharr [radiAllahu anhu] said:

“Those who have the most will have the least on the Day of Resurrection, except for those upon whom Allah bestowed wealth, and they started giving it away left and right, front and back, and used it to do good. “

Paucity of Hasanaat (good deeds) will delay their entry and cause others to go ahead of them, after they were foremost in this world. In Sunan ibn Maajah it is narrated that Abu Dharr said: The Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said:

“Those who have a lot will be the lowest in status on the Day of Resurrection, except those who said with their wealth, ‘this way and that way’ (i.e., spending in the way of Allah), and earned it from good sources. “‘

[Silsilat al-Ahaadeeth as-Saheehah, 4/364, hadith no. 1 766.]

 

The Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) also told us that those who indulge heavily in worldly luxuries and wealth will not be able to overcome the obstacles and terrors of the Day of Resurrection.

 

In Shu ‘ab al Eemaan it is narrated that Umm ad-Darda’ said: “I said to Abu’dDarda’,

 ‘Why do you not ask as So and so has asked?’ He said, ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) say,

‘Ahead of you there is a very difficult obstacle which those who are burdened (with wealth and luxury) will not be able to overcome. “‘

Refraining From Harming One Who Says: La ilaaha illallaah

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah [radiAllahu anhu] that the Messenger of Allah [sallallahu alaihi wasallam] said:

“I have been commanded to fight the people until they say: La ilaaha illallaah. If they say it, then their blood and wealth are protected from me, except for a right that is due from it, and their reckoning will be with Allah” 

[Sunan Ibn Majah, vol. 5, no. 3927, sahih]

 

Comments:

 

a] Everyone who pronounces the fundamental word of Islam (la ilaaha illallaah Muhammad ur rasoolullah), all the rulings of Islam applies to him in this world. If he does not have faith in his hearf he will be punished in the Hereafter.

 

b] ‘Blood and wealth are protected’ means that they are not killed by waging war against them, and their property is not taken as booty or Fai’ (ie. booty gained without fighting).

 

c] ‘Except for a right’ means punishing them for their crimes such as cutting off the hand of a thief, and flogging those who accuse chaste women of adultery, killing someone as punishment for murdering an innocent person etc. ‘Except for a right’ also means forcing them to give Zakat and paying the obligatory expenses, collecting the blood money for an intentional murder with the agreement of the heirs of the one who is killed, and demanding the blood money from the murderer or his tribe in an accidental killing, with the agreement of the heirs of the one who is killed, etc.

Abu Hurayrah (radyAllahu`anhu) narrated that the Prophet (salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, “Seven [types of] people are shaded by Allah in the shade of His Throne, on the Day when there will be no shade but His Shade [i.e. on the Day of Judgement] –

[1] a just ruler, a young man who grew up in the worship of Allah, [2] a person whose heart is attached to the mosque [and longs to return to it] from the moment he leaves it until he returns to it, [3] two persons who love each other for the sake of Allah, [4] meet for His sake and depart from each other for His sake, [5] a person who remembers Allah in solitude and his eyes well up with tears, [6] a man whom an extremely beautiful and rich woman seduces, but he [rejecting her seduction] says, ‘I fear Allah’; and [7] a person who gives charity and conceals it [to such an extent] that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given.”

Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (radyAllahu`anhu) said, “The miser will not escape one of seven things –

[1] either he will die and the one who will inherit his wealth will spend it in that which Allah the Exalted has forbidden, or [2] Allah will empower over him a tyrant ruler who will take his wealth from him after humiliating him, or [3] He will inflame in him a desire that will cause him to loose his wealth, or [4] he will have the idea of constructing a building in an unsuitable piece of land and will thus waste his wealth, or [5] one of the calamities of the dunya such as drowning, burning, theft or similar things will befall it, or [6] he will be afflicted with permanent illness and he will spend all his wealth seeking a cure, or [7] he will bury the wealth in a place which he will forget and thus will never find it again.”

 

`Umar (radyAllahu`anhu) said,

[1] The one who laughs a lot will lose his respect; [2]the one who makes mockery of people will be mocked by others; [3] the one who is excessive in something will become known for it; [4] the one who speaks a lot will make many blunders; [5] the one who makes many blunders will lose his sense of shame; [6] the one who loses his sense of shame will lose his God-consciousness; and [7] the one who loses his God-consciousness will cause his heart to die.”

`Uthman (radyAllahu`anhu) said when discussing the saying of Allah the Exalted, “And beneath it was a treasure for them, and their father was righteous man”, “the treasure is a gold tablet and on it were written seven lines:

[1] I am amazed at the one who knows death is coming yet laughs; [2] I am amazed at the one who knows that all things are predestined yet becomes distressed over what he has missed; [3] I am amazed at the one who knows about accountability and yet gathers wealth; [4] I am amazed at the one who knows about the Hellfire yet sins; [5] I am amazed at the one who believes in Allah with certainty yet remembers others beside Him; [6] I am amazed at the one who believes in Paradise with certainty yet is at ease in the dunya; and [7] I am amazed at the one who knows Satan is an enemy yet obeys him.”

 

`Ali (radyAllahu`anhu) was asked,

“What is heavier than the sky? What is wider than the earth? What is richer than the sea? What is harder than rock? What is hotter than fire? What is colder than ice? What is more bitter then poison?

 

He replied, “[1] Accusing the innocent is heavier than the sky; [2] the Truth is wider than the earth; [3] a content heart is richer than the sea; [4] the heart of a hypocrite is harder than a rock; [5] a tyrant ruler is hotter than fire; [6] being in need of help from a scoundrel is colder than ice; and [7] backbiting is more bitter than poison).”

 

Ibn `Abbas (radyAllahu`anhu) said,

“It is a duty on an intelligent person to choose seven things over seven others – [1] poverty over wealth, [2] lowliness over honour, [3] humility over arrogance, [4] hunger over satiety, [5] sadness over happiness, [6] inferiority over superiority, and [7] death over life.”

8 Advises from 4 Khulafa-e-Rashideen [Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and Ali]

Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (radyAllahu`anhu) said,

“There are eight things which are adornments for eight others – [1] chastity is the adornment for poverty; [2] gratitude is the adornment for blessings; [3] patience is the adornment for calamity; [4] gentleness is the adornment for knowledge; [5] humility is the adornment for the student; [6] much crying is the adornment for fear [of Allah]; [7] not boasting of one’s generosity to its recipient is the adornment for charity; and [8] complete calmness and inner concentration is the adornment for prayer.”

 

 

`Umar (radyAllahu`anhu) said,

[1] The one who abandons superfluous speech will be given wisdom, [2] the one who abandons superfluous looking will be given the tranquillity of the heart; [3] the one who abandons superfluous food will be given delight in worship; [4] the one who abandons superfluous laughter will be given veneration; [5] the one who abandons superfluous joking will be given a beautiful appearance; [6] the one who abandons the love of the dunya will be granted the love of the Hereafter; [7] the one who abandons busying himself with the faults of others will be given the ability to rectify his own faults; and [8] the one who abandons questioning the Essence of Allah the Exalted will given security from hypocrisy.”

 

 

`Uthman (radyAllahu`anhu) said,

“Signs of a person who really know Allah are eight  [1] his heart is in a state of fear and [2] hope, [3] his tongue is in a state of praise and [4] gratitude, [5] his eyes are in a state of shame and [6] tears, and [7] his will is in leaving the dunya and [8] seeking the pleasure of his Lord.

 

 

`Ali (radyAllahu`anhu) said,

[1] There is no good in prayer without concentration and calmness; [2] there is no good in fasting without refraining from idle talk; [3] there is no good in reading without any contemplation; [4] there is no good in knowledge without piety; [5] there is no good in wealth without generosity; [6] there is no good in brotherhood without caring for another; [7] there is no good in a blessing that is short-lived; and [8] there is no good in supplication without sincerity.”

Ten advises from few Wise men

An Ascetic said,

It is incumbent upon the intelligent person when he repents to do ten things – seek forgiveness with the tongue; regret with the heart; abandon the sin with the body; resolve never to return to it (the act of disobedience); love of the Hereafter; hate the dunya; reduce speech; reduce food and drink so that he can devote himself to knowledge and worship; and reduce his sleep. Allah the Exalted says, ‘Little did they sleep at night, and in the early hours of dawn they did seek forgiveness.’”

 

 

 

Luqman said to his son,

Wisdom is in doing ten things – enlivening the dead heart, sitting with the needy, staying away from the gathering of kings, honouring the humble, freeing the slave, being hospitable to the stranger,  enriching the poor, and venerating the people of honour. These things are better than wealth, are a protection from fear, a weapon in war, a merchandise at the time of commerce, an intercessor when afflicted with terror, an indication that conviction has entered the heart, and a covering when no clothes can cover one [on the Day of Judgement].”

 

An ascetic said,

Ten characteristics are hated by Allah from ten [types of] people – miserliness from the rich, arrogance from the poor, greed from scholars, lack of shame from women, love of the dunya from the elderly, laziness from the youth, oppression from the rulers, cowardice from warriors, self-infatuation from ascetics, and ostentation from worshippers.”

 

Yahya ibn Mu`adh al-Razi said:

“O you who entreats his Lord with all types of speech!
And who asks of Him residence in the Land of Speech
Who ceaselessly delays repentance year after year
I do not see you being just to your soul amongst all people
Had you filled your day with fasting, O heedless one!
And stayed awake all night in prayer
And diminished your water and food
You would have been fit to attain the honour of elevated rank
And given the ability to perform great feats by the Lord of creation
And secured the greatest pleasure of the Possessor of Majesty and
Generosity”

From the chapter on ‘Hoping for Allah’s Mercy’: Tanbih Al-Ghafileen


 

It was said:

“When the following verse was revealed: {“...My Mercy embraces all things…”} [al-A’raf; 156],

Satan – may Allah curse him – became hopeful and said: “I am a thing of those things, so I will have a portion of Allah’s Mercy!”

And the Jews and Christians became hopeful and said: “We area thing of those things, so we will have a portion of it.”

So, when the saying of Allah {“…I shall reserve it for those who are pious, give charity, and believe in Our signs…”} was revealed, then Satan lost hope of receiving any of His Mercy.

But, the Jews and Christians said: “We are pious, we give charity, and we believe in the signs of our Lord, so we are still eligible for Allah’s Mercy!”

Then, the saying of Allah {“Those who follow the unlettered Prophet and Messenger…”} [al-A’raf; 157] was revealed – meaning, those who believe in Muhammad (peace be upon him).

So, the Jews and Christians then lost all hope, and the Mercy remained exclusively for the believers.”

 

It was said:

“O Lord! You have given us one mercy, and have honored us with it, and it is Islam.So, if you give us one hundred portions of Your Mercy, then how can we not be hopeful for Your forgiveness?”

 

It was said:

“As long as the person is in good health, then fear of Allah is preferred. Once he becomes sick and is unable to perform many more good deeds, then hope in His Mercy is preferred.”

 

It was said:

“O Lord! You have Created Paradise and made it a meeting place for your allies, and the disbelievers have lost all hope of entering it, and the Angels were created without being in need of it,and You are also not in need of it. So, if you will not give me Paradise, then who will You give it to?”
