Do the devils die?

There is no doubt that the jinn, and the devils among them, do die. The following Quranic verse applies to them,

“Everyone that is therein will pass away; There remains but the countenance of your Lord of Might and Glory. Which is it, of the favors of your Lord, that you deny?

” (al-Rahmaan 26-28).

 

 

In Sahih al-Bukhari it is reported from Ibn Abbas that the Prophet used to say

“I seek refuge, by your Glory, the One, whom there is no other god but You, the One who does not die, and the jinn and mankind do die.”

 

Concerning the length of their lives, we do not know much except what Allah has said concerning the accursed Satan who has been given respite and life until the Day of Judgment. Allah says

“He said: Reprieve me till the day when they are raised (from the dead). He said: Lo! you are of those reprieved”

(AI-Asaaf 14-15).

 

 

Concerning other jinn or devils, we do not know their lifespans. But we do know that their lifespans are longer than that of the humans.

 

Further evidence that they do die is the report that Khaalid ibn Waleed killed the devil of al-Uza (a tree that the Arabs used to worship).

And a Companion killed a jinn that took the shape of a serpent.

Having a Group of women for Ruqyas

Questions:

Is a man Raqi allowed to perform an Ruqya unto a group of women in one place, where their Mahrams (relatives forbidden in marriage) are available in case their own women go epileptic or faint?

 

Answer:

It is not forbidden for a man Raqi to perform a group Ruqya for an assembly of women. It is the presence of a man and a non-Mahram woman on their own that is forbidden. Accoding to the hadith, ―If a man and a woman (who are not Mahrams) get together on their own, Satan comes in.[ 1] for such a task, the Raqi must be a trustworthy person of religious commitment, faith and righteousness.

 

He has to limit his Ruqya to recitation and prayers behind a screen, and he must not directly touch the woman‘s body. It is recommended that the patients‘ Mahrams be present in case help is needed. [2]

It was said:

“When the following verse was revealed: {“...My Mercy embraces all things…”} [al-A’raf; 156],

Satan – may Allah curse him – became hopeful and said: “I am a thing of those things, so I will have a portion of Allah’s Mercy!”

And the Jews and Christians became hopeful and said: “We area thing of those things, so we will have a portion of it.”

So, when the saying of Allah {“…I shall reserve it for those who are pious, give charity, and believe in Our signs…”} was revealed, then Satan lost hope of receiving any of His Mercy.

But, the Jews and Christians said: “We are pious, we give charity, and we believe in the signs of our Lord, so we are still eligible for Allah’s Mercy!”

Then, the saying of Allah {“Those who follow the unlettered Prophet and Messenger…”} [al-A’raf; 157] was revealed – meaning, those who believe in Muhammad (peace be upon him).

So, the Jews and Christians then lost all hope, and the Mercy remained exclusively for the believers.”

 

It was said:

“O Lord! You have given us one mercy, and have honored us with it, and it is Islam.So, if you give us one hundred portions of Your Mercy, then how can we not be hopeful for Your forgiveness?”

 

It was said:

“As long as the person is in good health, then fear of Allah is preferred. Once he becomes sick and is unable to perform many more good deeds, then hope in His Mercy is preferred.”

 

It was said:

“O Lord! You have Created Paradise and made it a meeting place for your allies, and the disbelievers have lost all hope of entering it, and the Angels were created without being in need of it,and You are also not in need of it. So, if you will not give me Paradise, then who will You give it to?”

Everyday the earth calls out with 9 things- Anas Ibn Malik (radyAllahu`anhu)

Anas Ibn Malik (radyAllahu`anhu) said, “Everyday the earth calls out with nine things, saying,

‘O son of Adam! You strive on my surface and your destination is my stomach;

you disobey [Allah] on my surface and you will be punished for it in my stomach;

you laugh on my surface and you will cry in my stomach;

you are happy on my surface and you will be sad in my stomach;

you gather wealth on my surface and you will regret gathering it in my stomach;

you are arrogant on my surface and you will be humiliated in my stomach;

you walk insolently on my surface and you will fall miserably into my stomach;

you walk in the light on my surface and you will be in the darkness in my stomach;

and you walk with crowds and large gatherings on my surface and you will be lonely in my stomach.”

Ten advises from a physician to cure the diseases of the heart

Al-Hasan al-Basri said, “One day I was walking with a young pious man in the narrow streets of Basra and its markets until we reached a physician sitting on a chair and around him were many men, women, and children who had bottles of water in their hands. Each one of them was seeking a cure for his illness.

 

The young man moved closer to the physician and asked him, ‘O physician! Do you have a medicine that cleans away sins and cures the [spiritual] diseases of the heart?

He replied ‘Yes!’

 

The young man said, ‘Give it to me!”

 

The physician said,

Take ten things from me

take the roots of the tree of poverty with the roots of the tree of humility,

and pour in it the milk of repentance,

then place it in the mortar of acceptance [of whatever is predestined for one],

crush it with the pestle of contentment,

then place it in the pot of piety,

pour over it the water of shame,

then boil it with the fire of love,

then place it in the cup of gratitude

and cool it down with the fan of hope,

then drink it with the spoon of praise.

If you do all of this then it will cure you of every illness and trial in this world and in the Hereafter.’”

Fabricated narration in Kitab at-Tawhid- Explanation by Shaikh Saalih al Uthaymeen

Ibn Abbas (May Allah be pleased with him) commented upon verse of Qur’an ‘But when He gave them a Salih (good in every aspect) child, they ascribed partners to Him’: ” When Adam had sexual relation with Eve, she became pregnant. At that time Iblis (Satan) came to them and said “I am the one who caused your expulsion from Paradise. Obey me, otherwise I shall cause your child to grow two horns like a deer by which he will puncture your belly when he comes out! I will do it! I will do it!” Satan thus frightened them (Adam and Eve) and said to name the boy “Abdul-Harith;’ (slave of the earth cultivator). They (Adam and Eve) did not obey him (Satan) and a dead child was born to them. When Eve became pregnant a second time, Satan again approached them and repeated the same demand but again they did not obey. And the second child was still born dead. She [Eve] became pregnant a third time, Satan again came to them and put the same demand mentioning what had happened before. Adam and Eve were overcome by love for the child and named the boy “Abdul-Harith (slave of the earth cultivator)”. And this is what Allah said (in the verse): “They made partners with Him for what they were given”.

Tawheed

Shaikh Ibn Uthaymeen [rahimahullah] said: And this story is false from number of angles:

1] That there is no authentic narration concerning that from Prophet Muhammed [sallallahu alaihi wasallam] – and it is from the kind of information that cannot be obtained except by revelation and Ibn Hazm said concerning this story, “Indeed it is a report that is superstitious lie.”

 

 

2] If this story was concerning Adam and Eve, then they either made repentance from the Shirk or died upon it, so whoever makes it permissible to hold that a single one of the Prophets died upon shirk than that is something severely wrong. And if they repented from Shirk, then it does not befit the wisdom, justice and mercy of Allah, that He mentions their mistakes and not their repentance from it. When Allah, the Most High, mentions the mistakes of some of the Prophets and Messengers, He mentions their repentance from it, as in the story of Adam and his wife, when he ate from the tree and they repented from it.

 

 

3] That the Prophets are protected from shirk by the agreement of Scholars.

 

 

4] That it is confirmed in the hadith of intercession, that the people will come to Adam and seek intercession from him, then he will excuse himself, due to eating from the tree and that is a sin, and if shirk had occurred from him, it would have been stronger excuse.

 

 

5] That in this story it is mentioned that Shaytan came to them and said: ‘I am your companion who got you out of paradise’, so if he said that, they would have known with certainty that he was an enemy to them and would not accept anything from him.

 

 

6] That in this story is his saying: ‘I will cause it to have horns that will puncture her belly….’, if he believed that it is possible he could actually do that, then this is shirk in Lordship because none but Allah is able to do that. And if he didn’t believe it was possible, then it is not possible to accept his saying.

 

 

7] The saying of Allah, the Most High: ‘Exalted be Allah above what they associate with Him’ [7:190] The pronoun is plural and if it was concerning Adam and Eve, it would have been in the dual form… But what is correct is that Al-Hasan [rahimahullah] said: ‘Indeed those intended in this verse are not Adam and Eve’, and what is meant is the polytheists from the children of Adam (descendants), as was mentioned by Ibn Kathir in his tafisr.

It is essential to know that sins and acts of disobedience are, necessarily, very harmful. Their harm effects upon the heart are akin to the harmful effects of poison upon the body, though the effects vary in their levels and intensities. So is there any evil or harm in this world, or in the Hereafter, except that it is due to sins and disobedience?

 

So what was it that expelled the two parents [i.e. Adam and Eve] from Paradise; the home of delight, bliss, splendor and joy; to the home of pain, sorrow and misfortune?

 

What was it that expelled Iblees [i.e. Satan] from the heavenly realms, causing him to be rejected and cursed; transforming him both inwardly and outwardly, so that his form became ugly and hideous – his inner form more hideous than his outer – replacing his nearness with remoteness, mercy with curse, his beauty with ugliness, from being in Paradise to being in the blazing Fire, from having faith to being an unbeliever, from having the patronage and friendship of Allaah, the Praiseworthy Guardian, to being the greatest enemy and opponent, from glorifying and praising Him to committing acts of unbelief, shirk, lies, deception and shamelessness, from being adorned with faith to being clothed in the garment of unbelief, sinfulness and disobedience, causing him to reach the deepest depths of despicability, plunging down in the sight of Allaah as far as it is possible to plunge; causing the anger of Allaah the Exalted to be upon him, making him an outcast – despised and humiliated – so that he became a leader for every sinner and criminal, becoming pleased with leadership for himself, after having reached the station of worship and nobility? O Allaah, we seek refuge in You from opposing Your command and falling into what You have forbidden.

 

What was it that caused the people of the earth to drown, to the extent that the water rose above even the mountain tops?

 

What was it that caused the violent winds to overcome the people of `Aad, such that it flung them down dead upon the face of the earth – as if they were lopped-off palm trunks – and it destroyed whatever dwellings and crops it came across, thus making them an example for nations until the Day of Resurrection?

What was it that caused the clouds of punishment to overcome the people of Shu’ayb, such that when these clouds were above their heads it rained scorching fire upon them? What was it that caused the Pharaoh and his people to be drowned in the ocean, and caused their souls to be transported to the Hellfire, so their bodies drowned and their souls burned?

 

What was it that caused Qaroon, his dwelling, wealth and family to sink down into the earth?

 

What was it that caused the destruction of those generations after Noah, and how they were afflicted with various punishments that caused their annihilation?

 

What was it that caused the destruction of the companions of Yaa Seen, with the clamorous shout, which destroyed them?

 

What caused there to be sent against the Children of Israa’eel enemies of great strength and might, plundering their homes, killing their men, enslaving their women and children, burning their dwellings, seizing their wealth, and then returning again a second time, destroying what was rebuilt after the first onslaught?

 

What was it that caused the various types of punishments to be set loose upon the Children of Israa’eel? Killing them, enslaving them, destroying their land and at times causing them to be oppressed by kings, whilst at another time causing them to be transformed into apes and swines -and finally the Lord took an oath that:

“He would certainly keep on sending against them, until the Day of Resurrection, those who will inflict themwith a humiliating torment.”

[Soorah al-A’raaf 7:167]

 

Imam Ahmad said: al-Waleed ibn Muslim related to us; that Safwaan ibn ‘Amr related to us; that `Abdur-Rahmaan ibn Jubayr ibn Nufayr related; from his father, who said:

“When Cyprus was conquered and its people were dispersed and they started weeping to each other, I saw Abud-Dardaa sitting alone and weeping. So I said to him: O Abud- Dardaa!What makes you weep on this day that Allaah has granted strength and honor to Islaam and its people? So he said: Woe be to you O Jubayr! How insignificant the creation becomes to Allaah when they turn away from His command. In front of us is a nation who were evidently powerful and who had dominion, yet they abandoned Allaah’s command, so look what has become of them.”

[Reported by Imaam Ahmad in az-Zuhd (1/86) with an authentic (saheeh) chain of narration; as stated by Shaykh `Alee Hasan al-Halabee in his verification of the book. (p.67)]

 

 

`Alee ibn al-Ja’d said: Shu’bah ibn `Amr ibn Murrah informed us; I heard Abul- Bukhtaree say: I was informed by someone, who heard the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) saying:

“The people will not perish, until they have no excuse left for themselves.”

[Reported by Ahmad (4/260) and Abu Daawood (no.4347) with an authentic chain of narration]

 

 

Imaam Ahmad reports in his Musnad, from the hadeeth of Umm Salamah, who said: I heard Allaah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) saying:

“When acts of disobedience become widespread in my ummah, then Allaah may send punishment upon them all from Himself” So I said: 0 Allaah’s Messenger! Even if there are righteous people amongst them that day? So he replied: “Indeed!” So I said: How will that be? He replied: “They will be afflicted with what afflicts the people, then they will move on to the forgiveness of Allaah and His good pleasure.”

[Reported by Ahmad (6/304) and one of its narrators is Layth ibn Abee Sulaym, who is weak. However the hadeeth is established due to further supporting narrations. Consult Silsilatul – Ahaadeethus-Saheehah (no.1372) of Shaykh al-Albaanee]
